About Munnar

The most popular tourist destination in Kerala is Munnar, situated at the confluence of three mountain Rivers (Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala) at the height of 1600 metres. It was the summer resort of the British Raj in South India. Miles and miles of manicured tea gardens, cardamom-planted woodlands, vast grasslands covering dome-shaped hills, exotic flora and fauna and ubiquitous brooks and silvery waterfalls all combine to give the visitor an otherworldly feeling.

Munnar is essentially a tea town. The tea plantations have now been taken over by the Tata Tea Company. The visitor is greeted with miles and miles of unending tea plantations on entry into Munnar. Among the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here is the Neelakurinji a flower which bathes the hills in blue colour once every twelve years.

Eravikulam National Park

By driving north from Munnar for 30 minutes and then hiking a few kilometres, you reach this sanctuary which is home to over three thousand free-roaming ibex, elephants, lion-tailed macaque, and the Nilgiri tahr (an endangered mountain goat). Declared as a National Park in 1978 it covers 97km of rolling grass hills forested valleys and is one of the ‘must do ' activities in the area.

Mattupetty Dam

10 km from Munnar, this popular picnic spot has activities like boating and horse riding and is a great place to spend the day especially if visiting with children. Marayoor around 40 km from Munnar has many firsts to its credit. It is the only place in Kerala with natural growth of sandalwood trees, natural caves with murals, and relics from Later Stone Age civilization. There is a sandalwood factory of the Forest Department of Kerala and a children's park extending across one hectare of land under the canopy of a single Banyan tree. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India - Anamudi - which towers over 2695 m and is an ideal spot for campers who like to do some trekking.
